I was looking that P/N up and it does look like it's a garrett GT17.  If it's indeed the case than a rebuild kit for this turbo is about $100... keep in mind that you will want this thing rebalanced after the rebuild.  It's not wise to spend $100 on rebuilding hte turbo and than having it go bad because it wasn't balanced 5K miles later.  What exactly failed on your turbo?

its dumping oil into the intake side so it looks like its laying a smoke screen but no rotor noise no squealing no buzzing no rubbing noise so im assuming oil seals or the like. i guess the next step is to remove the part.

is this a repair i might handle? a step by step i glanced at says no special tools needed and that if i mark the shaft and turbine i can reassemble without rebalancing. was it easy to disassemble and reassemble? i've done brake jobs waterpumps radiatior and the like but never a major engine tear down and i wonder if there are pitfalls to avoid. my shop is pulling the turbo as we speak and once i have it in my hands i will know exactly which turbo it is.

It is not difficult to disassemble...just have to be really careful when lifting the housings off so that you don't damage the blades.  You'r actual problem is right under the compressor wheel.  It's up to you if you want to do a complete rebuild (I would), but you could just replace the rubber O-ring that under the sealplate and call it a day...
